Waiting for Christmas in Wuthering Heights

December 23, 2018 ~ storiesbykate ~ Leave a comment

Dumaguete — The holidays can be the best of times, but it can be the worst of times as well. The holiday season is synonymous with family, revelry, reunions and fun. And it can be fun for the most part. A time when you reunite and reconnect with loved ones and friends whom you hardly … Continue reading Waiting for Christmas in Wuthering Heights

Immanuel, God is with Me

December 18, 2018 ~ storiesbykate ~ Leave a comment

It was a cool evening and like the past two evenings, I was again looking forward to hearing what God had to say to me at mass. It had been a happy day which began with a Miss Universe win. I sat quietly, reading the missalette while waiting for the mass to begin. The words … Continue reading Immanuel, God is with Me

Preparing the Heart for Christmas

December 17, 2018 ~ storiesbykate ~ Leave a comment

I suppose you can’t ever take the Catholic out of the girl. I know. God is everywhere, and really, in everyone. Sometimes though it’s hard to see that when the days are challenging or someone is being obnoxious or unkind towards you. I have always found a certain comfort in sitting in a quiet church, … Continue reading Preparing the Heart for Christmas

Loss and The First Man on the moon

October 29, 2018October 29, 2018 ~ storiesbykate ~ Leave a comment

There are moments from childhood that are, for one reason or other, seared in one's memory bank. There is one of me -- almost five years old, shrieking in glee in front of our B&W Zenith television because a man had finally landed on the moon. Though the image on the television was grainy, I … Continue reading Loss and The First Man on the moon

Love That Heals

July 24, 2018 ~ storiesbykate ~ Leave a comment

When you find someone who loves you through your storm, keep them in your life. The one who loves you through your storm sits with you in the rain, and wades through the flood with you. They’re the ones who put their arms around you when the thunder and lightning make you shake. Their love … Continue reading Love That Heals

Meeting Hope The grief journey has brought me so many amazing, and grace-filled moments I would never, ever have dreamed about. Meeting NY Times best selling author Hope Edelman was one such golden moment. In 1981 we were both 16. She lost her mother in the summer before her senior year; I lost my dad in April 1981. Out of her grief was born “Motherless Daughters” which stayed on The NY Times bestseller list for 24 weeks. Hope has written five books, is a much sought after speaker on mother loss, runs Motherless Daughters retreats, and is a personal coach. Her own personal loss journey has inspired and propelled her towards her life work. I am in awe of her body of work, but more so her kindness and generosity in making time for me that afternoon in Brentwood. With Hope’s guidance, I now look forward to putting together and starting Motherless Daughters support groups in the Philippines next year. ❤️ #thisis55🌿 Lesson #24 Work towards your dreams and if it’s part of God’s plan for you, it will happen at the right time and place. Lesson #25. Your grief and loss will take you to places and moments you never would have imagined, stay open always.
This. The best thing you can give someone this season is love. Be extra patient. Be extra kind. ❤️
Arizona was all about family, and friends who are family. ❤️Finding a home in the heart, kindness, caring and warmth of the desert. Arizona was long road trips, and train rides, hearty breakfasts filled with love and laughter; watching Criminal Minds, the Good Doctor and The Irishman deep into the night with a dear friend. The warmth and love at the table of Thanksgiving lunch and dinner. Making new friends. Re-connecting with old friends. Raiding stores and antique shops on the Black Friday weekend. Beautiful churches. Endless stretches of cotton fields, gorgeous sunsets like no other. Koi, huskies, a cat named Joe, quiet Chloe, and smart as a whip, Brandy. Love, love, love all around. Thank you my Phoenix family for the footprints on my heart. No goodbyes. Until we meet again. ❤️ Lesson 22 : Friends are the family we chose. Lesson 23. : There is so much love and beauty to be found in the ordinary days. Pay attention. Lesson 24 : Kindness heals the heart. Lesson 25 : Make room in your heart for new people. #thisis55🌿
